Green Jobs and Justice

Wales is one of the dirtiest countries in the world and will face intense pressure to reduce its carbon emissions. Carbon trading schemes, regulation and taxation, as well as consumer demand will force business to change and adapt, putting thousands of jobs at risk.  While there is potential to create new jobs, many other parts of the UK share Wales's ambitions and are arguably better equipped to achieve them.  In all the change ahead it must not be workers and the communities they live in which bear the brunt of change.

Delegates Demand Faster Pharmaceuticals

Sir Michael Rawlins, Chair of NICE, was the keynote speaker at a conference on access to medicines held in October. His tour de force through the history of pharmaceuticals from 16th century apothecaries to the birth of Beechams pills in the 1900's, highlighted the long existing tension between society and the pharmaceutical industry.

A full report of the event is now available to download, including summaries of all presentations as well as the questions and discussion promoted by delegates.

Paying the Price of Being Poor

Low income households face extra costs for fuel, financial services and education according to a new Bevan Foundation report. Paying the Price of Being Poor looks at what should be done to help low income households who are penalised simply because they do not have buying power.

The report was launched on Tuesday 17th November 2009.

Digital Wales, Divided Wales

Much of the debate about broadband in Wales is about access and speed. The key issue, this report argues, is the low take-up amongst older people and low income households. Unless more is done to tackle this aspect of the digital divide, social and economic exclusion will get worse.

Good to be here: positive aspects of the Heads of the Valleys

This report hits back at the stereotype of poverty and deprivation in the Heads of the Valleys. Using a mixture of statistics, evidence from inspections and independent awards, the Heads of the Valleys emerges as offering a quality of life that is at least as good as - and in some ways better than - that of Wales's big cities.

The project was funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, Caerphilly Teaching LHB, and Tydfil Training.
